The Struggle is Real: A Non-Photogenic Person's Guide to Professional Headshots

It took me about 100 tries to get a version of this photo without a double-chin…..

Oh, the dreaded professional headshot – that moment when you’re expected to exude confidence, professionalism, and an air of ‘I’ve got this’ while facing the lens. For many, it’s a breeze, but for some of us, striking a photogenic pose feels as easy as taming a wild, untamable beast. If you're in the 'non-photogenic' club like me, welcome! Let's commiserate…

The Pre-Shoot Jitters

It all begins with the invitation for a professional headshot session. The immediate panic sets in – "Do I even know how to smile naturally? Are my facial muscles familiar with the concept of cooperation?" Cue the frantic YouTube tutorials on how to look ‘natural’ in front of a camera.

The Awkward Posing Attempts

In front of the mirror, we morph into different versions of ourselves, trying to find that one angle that doesn't scream, "I'm trying too hard" or "I'm incredibly uncomfortable right now." The "smize" à la Tyra Banks becomes the practiced art, but ends up resembling more of a squint with a hint of confusion.

The Photographer’s Encouragement... and Your Inner Monologue

"Relax, just be yourself," says the cheerful photographer. Meanwhile, our inner voice is screaming, "BE MYSELF? You mean, the self that turns into a frozen mannequin as soon as a camera is pointed at it?"

The Clicking of a Thousand Shots

The rapid-fire clicking of the camera feels like a ticking time bomb. With every click, we wonder, "Was that the one? Or do I look like I just saw a ghost?"

I am here to help….as a non-photogenic person but also a professional photographer

Tips for the Non-Photogenic Professional

  • Embrace authenticity - let your personality shine through the lens.

  • Find a photographer that helps you feel comfortable and can bring out that personality.

  • Laugh at yourself - humor can be your best asset.

  • Spend time planning out your clothing and getting your hair and makeup done so that you enter the studio feeling confident.

  • Trust your photographer - they're skilled at capturing your best angles (and hopefully at photoshop ;-)

  • Practice beforehand - get comfortable in front of a mirror.

In Conclusion

Being non-photogenic might feel like a hurdle, but it’s not a roadblock to success. The journey might involve some awkward moments and hilarious outtakes, but it’s all part of the fun.

So, to my fellow non-photogenic warriors, take a deep breath, flash a smile (even if it feels awkward), and remember, there’s more to success than a picture-perfect headshot.

Because in the end, it's not the picture that defines us, but the awesome humans we are behind the lens.

Keep being fabulous, non-photogenic you!
